Located only three kilometers away from the
city center of Tudela (Navarra, Spain) stands the four-star Hotel
Aire de Bardenas, an ecological architectural jewel created by
Barcelona-based architects Emiliano López & Mónica
Rivera.
Its name explains it all: in the middle of a
wheat field, surrounded by the desertic landscape of the Bardenas
Reales natural reserve, Hotel Aire de Bardenas is conceived as a
shelter from the dry winds or "Aire" of the desert. The hotel is a
perfect high-end getaway experience from which to admire the beauty
of this unusual natural environment without giving up the luxurious
facilities: self-produced ecological food restaurant, bar, swimming
pool, meeting room and its twenty-two very special rooms.

Recycled wood containers used in the local
fields provide an excellent and cheap source of wind protection for
the outdoor spaces of the hotel. They also suggest the same
building logic as the area's typical agricultural constructions.
Far from standing out, the hotel melts into the dry
landscape.

As part of the commission, Emiliano López and Mónica Rivera were specifically asked to build fast and cheap while using dry-construction technologies. Just like the stacked wooden containers, the whole hotel could be disarmed and recycled. Rather than following popular tendencies in Spain for spartan and almost naked unfinished buildings, this project clearly shows the studio's thorough attitude:
Working with circumstance and turning constraints into opportunities, we try to find constructive and conceptual responses that are specific to each project and to each site, putting emphasis on ease of use, discreet intervention within the context and clarity of construction, the architects explain.

Avoiding the presence of big volumes, the
apparently scattered cube structures of the hotel are strategically
arranged to create a central courtyard, opening southeast towards
the swimming pool. Providing protection from the wind, they also
create courts and multiple views in and out of the hotel. The rooms
are divided into either those close to the main building with their
own private court or those standing right on the wheat fields, like
private luxury shelters with open views to the spectacular
landscape. All the exterior spaces in between and the outdoor
gardens are carefully designed using the colors, stones and
vegetation of the site.

Specifically for this project Emiliano López and
Mónica Rivera designed everything - from the bathtubs and shower
plates in folded coated steel sheet to most of the furniture of the
hotel. Each room is thoroughly thought paying attention to every
detail. On the generous entrance, wooden furniture containing the
minibar, safe and shelves, allow guests to leave all their
belongings behind and continue to the sleeping area, to rest and
enjoy the views. Only the toilet remains closed. The big bathtub
has its own window or door to the private court and is only
separated from the bed area by white cotton curtains.

The window is clearly the main attraction in
these rooms and not only because of the view. Smartly designed by
oversizing their depth and lining the interior with plywood, these
windows become pieces of furniture themselves. They become a sofa
or an extra bed for the room, the perfect spot for guests to read,
watch TV or just lay comfortably admiring the surroundings
outside.

Hotel Aire de Bardenas is a great, complete work that successfully carries out stunning landscape, architecture and interior design features. The hotel has been awarded several prizes here among Best Designed Hotel 2010 by Monocle Magazine and the AR Architectural Review Prize for Emerging Architecture 2008.
Emiliano López & Mónica Rivera, who also won
the FAD Award in 2008, have certainly established themselves as one
of the most solid upcoming architecture studios from Spain.

Using old ceramic tiles and recycled materials the Ceramic Museum and Mosaic Garden will not only be an example of a sustainable project but also link the museum's identity to the local culture.
The Ceramic Museum and Mosaic Garden are located in a core position of the Jinzhou World Landscape Art Exposition of 2013, a large-scale international exhibition that shows innovative landscape architecture and the art of gardening from around the world. The exposition park will be permanently preserved, with an extension of 176 hectares, as a central park for the city.
During the exhibition the Ceramic Museum will feature the art and history of ceramics. Once the exhibition is over the building will become a small museum for porcelain./27536/casanova_hernandez-ceramic_museum%20(2).jpg)

The museum is integrated in a three-dimensional crackled landscape that on one hand is inspired by the ancient mosaic technique used in Europe and, on the other hand, by the delicate Longquao porcelain developed in the region for over 1800 years.
The circular surface of the Mosaic Garden is divided into smaller irregular fragments of different colors (like tesserae in a mosaic) that create a vibrant, three-dimensional landscape. /27537/casanova_hernandez-ceramic_museum%20(3).jpg)
Image courtesy Casanova + Hernandez architects
The colorful surfaces are created by using mainly two elements: different types of flowers combined in monochromatic flower beds and broken recycled ceramic tiles that cover pavements and benches along the circulation paths./27538/casanova_hernandez-ceramic_museum%20(4).jpg)
Photo courtesy Casanova + Hernandez architects
The interior of the museum is a continuous, irregular space inspired by the traditional porcelain. Floor, walls and ceiling are fragmented following a pattern of irregular polygons; the characteristic “ice cracks" lines of the Longquan porcelain (Longquanyao). The walls are clear colored with a semi-glossy finish. Small windows and skylights allow filtered natural light to enter the museum. /27539/casanova_hernandez-ceramic_museum%20(5).jpg)

The objects are exhibited in glazed showcases, integrated in the cracked composition, that become virtual columns articulating circulation in the space.
Culture, innovation, art and sustainability are interlinked concepts in the Ceramic Museum and Mosaic Garden. Inspired by a rich tradition from the past and, at the same time, exploring new solutions for a sustainable future.

This September we visited Vancouver and the impressive Richmond Olympic Oval, which was built for the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in 2010, and designed by Cannon Design. It originally housing a long speed skating track, but was planned with an eye to the future, so it would be used regularly after the Winter Games. Thus a lot of improvements have been added to the original building, offering a huge number and variety of sports facilities: including 2 Olympic-sized ice rinks, 18 badminton courts, 16 international-sized table tennis tables, and all kinds of children’s’ summer sport camps, events and programs.
/27334/Vancouver-Olympic-Oval-sign.jpg)
Photo: Peter RasmussenThe distinctive feature of the Richmond Oval is its unique "wood wave" roof. The roof is made of wood, which was attacked by "mountain pine" beetle and would have been discarded, if not used for building. The one-of-a-kind wood panels were designed by structural engineers Fast + Epp , and constructed at the design build firm StructureCraft Builders Inc. The Oval received an award of excellence in architectural innovation from the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, specifically for its innovative use of the “beetle-killed” pinewood in its ceiling.
The construction consists of arches spanning 100 meters, with a triangular hollow section that hides sprinklers, electrical wiring and ventilation. The bows are built of steel and wood, arranged in a pattern that allows acoustic regulation of the hall.
Entering the hall, one is met with high-energy activity everywhere: Ice hockey, speed skating, table tennis, wheelchair rugby, climbing, cheerleading, fitness and much more. The hall’s design has a bird and fish theme, inspired by the nearby river wildlife. Working out in the enormous fitness center, people have stunning views over the North Shore Mountains and Fraser River.
Being one of the world’s front-runners in sustainable urban development, Vancouver has an ambition to become the greenest city in the world in 2020. Although it is only LEED Silver certified (unlike other buildings in Vancouver built after July 2010, which are Gold certified), the Richmond Olympic Oval still offers a number of sustainable solutions: e.g. the waste heat from the refrigeration systems cooling the skate lanes is reused to heat the spectator rows and other areas of the hall.
/27335/vancouver-Olympic-oval-outd.jpg)
Photo: Peter RasmussenThe outdoor sculptural environment surrounding the Olympic Oval is also well worth a visit. Designed by artist Janet Echelman, it includes a pond filled with rainwater harvested from the roof. The water serves as a gathering space and water supply for irrigation of the surrounding landscapes, and is also used for flushing toilets in the building.

The Sheraton Miramar, built on a jewel-like cluster of nine islands, surrounded by lagoons and sandy beaches, is a 5-star resort hotel consisting of over 400 guest rooms and various public spaces.

The design for the hotel grounds takes advantage of the sea water as a landscaping feature, with every guest room having views either over the water or over the central swimming pool court. This landscaped pool court features a Turkish steam pavilion, cold plunge pool, hot Jacuzzi pool and a pool restaurant with a terrace area and bar. An exercise/lap pool is provided to the south of this court and a separate children's pool area to the north. The pool area is bordered by pergola on all sides.

The character of the buildings, in massing, materials, facades and interior furnishing and decoration, is an interpretation of local building tradition and elements of ancient Egyptian architecture; truncated or inverted pyramids and dramatic columns are everywhere. The guest rooms are organised into a variety of identifiable groups, each of which has its own distinctive set of facades.

The design received a Design Award from the American Institute of Architects - New Jersey Chapter in 1996.
The clients, won over by Graves' "sense of imagination" , have contracted Graves to build three more hotels in Egypt after the Miramar was finished.

کتاب طراحان چگونه می اندیشند، ترجمه ای است از چاپ سوم کتاب How Designers Think: The Design Process Demystified
